Jon Goldberg - Book Edit

Jonathan Goldberg is a London-based portrait and reportage photographer with a passion for Sustainable Living stories and a great talent for creating contemporary, dynamic portraits.

I’ve been lucky to have the chance to work on several of Jonathan’s projects since 2014 and he simply became one of the photographers I’m fondest of; his stories are always interesting, both from an environmental and social point of view, his style is fresh, genuine, and he has a gift for finding fantastic quirky characters and to portrait them in such a spontaneous way to make the viewer really visit the places, meet the people. I must admit his characters stay with me for a long time, even after I finish working on the projects.

I’m thrilled to showcase here the most recent of Jonathan’s project, “Thames Islands”, that we edited and sequenced both for his website and for a book; as always, it makes me feel like I’ve just come back from a fantastic journey where I’ve met incredible people and saw incredible new places.

This is Jonathan’s e-mail after viewing the edit, which he’s been so kind to give me permission to publish:

“Thank you so much for your edit.

I viewed it a few times initially after you sent it, and now I've uploaded it into Blurb's online template, which enables me to see it better in book form (as intended).

The more familiar that I have become with your edit, the more I love it - it's great! If anything it's too good in that if ever I try to add or make a slight change the whole narrative or feel somehow changes for the worse.

When I have commissioned you with one of my projects, I have ideas for a sequence, but then you have come back to me with an edit that slowly draws the viewer in, creating intrigue and revealing a narrative in a very lyrical and playful manner.

I really like it a lot ;-). Some of the pairings are inspired, and it generally looks very poetic, and as you say like a journey - somewhat ethereal I feel, like entering a waterworld.

I'm very grateful to you for spending time with the project, and for seeing so much value in the images. Once again you've provided me with some order, where previously there was chaos (in my head as well as on my computer!).

The style I can see is comparable to the wonderful edit you made for me of the Grow Heathrow images, with the emphasis on intimacy, story-telling and "home". “
