After being selected as the Photographer in Residence with the Canal and River Trust (CRT) In London (UK), Jonathan Goldberg started travelling extensively the country for 6 months, a journey that took him to some stunning locations, from the heights of the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct in North Wales (a UNESCO World Heritsage site), to the longest tunnel on the canal network, located at Standedge in West Yorkshire.
Many pictures were taken in London, but he photographed also in Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wolverhampton as well as in the open countryside.

The result is an impressive portrait of a country through beautiful, unusual sceneries and the life of the people who have chosen to live near water as a precise lifestyle.



Jonathan contacted me at the end of his Residency to edit the project for his website.

As always with all Jonathan’s works I have had the privilege to work on, I was impressed by his uncanny ability to find the quirkest, most colorful subjects among the many residents of the canals’ network, its eye for finding beauty in overlooked places, its gift to blend himself unobtrusively in new environments… The amount of images he had taken was very consistent, so my work involved a first, broader selection to individuate patterns and rhythms, and two narrower ones that we eventually merged into a final one to publish online.
